Joannie Mae Matthews, born on December 31, 1922, in Bessemer, Alabama, was a prominent singer, pianist, producer, songwriter, and record executive. Known as the Godmother of Detroit soul, she founded Detroit's Northern Recording Company in 1958, which became a launchpad for many future stars. Throughout her career, she established several other record labels in Detroit, including ones named after her husband and daughter. As a recording artist, Matthews was most active during the 1960s, but in the 1970s, she shifted her focus primarily to producing. She later became involved with a group that featured her son on drums and her daughter as the lead singer. Joannie Mae Matthews passed away on January 6, 2002.
