Joe Harriot was a Jamaican-born British saxophone player, born on July 15, 1928, in Kingston, Jamaica. He passed away on January 2, 1973, in Southampton, England, at the age of 44. Educated at a Catholic orphanage in Kingston, Harriot moved to the United Kingdom in 1951. Initially a bebop player, he developed his own version of free jazz while recovering from tuberculosis in the hospital. In the mid-1960s, after meeting Indian violinist, he collaborated to fuse the music of the sub-continent with jazz, forming the double quintet Indo-Jazz Fusions and recording several albums as co-leaders.
