Joe Harriott was a Jamaican-born British saxophone player, born on July 15, 1928, in Kingston, Jamaica. He passed away on January 2, 1973, in Southampton, England, at the age of 44. Harriott was educated at a Catholic orphanage in Kingston and settled in the United Kingdom in 1951. Initially a bebop player, he developed his own version of free jazz while recovering from tuberculosis in the hospital. In the mid-1960s, he met Indian violinist, and together they created a fusion of sub-continental music with jazz, forming the double quintet Indo-Jazz Fusions and recording several albums as co-leaders.
