Joe Jama, born Joe Perales on June 12, 1949, was a soul singer and bassist known for his contribution to the Brown Power anthem "Yo Soy Chicano." He passed away on January 14, 2024. Alongside singers David Mares and Henry Hernandez, Jama played a significant role in popularizing the term "Chicano" during a time when it was often viewed negatively. He was drawn to the gritty and funky side of R&B, and his real education in music came from observing influential bass players like Jimmy Casas and Jack Barber in bars and dance venues. Jama's deep appreciation for the groove and the foundational role of the bass in funk defined his musical journey.
