Joe Masters was an American pianist, arranger, and composer known for his work in the jazz genre. He led his own trio during the 1960s and 1970s, initially featuring John Doling on bass and Skip Switzer on drums, with Joe on piano. In the 1970s, the trio included vocalist Stan Hirsch, guitarist and bassist, and Joe Rizzo on drums. Masters and his trio gained recognition for backing Anita O'Day on "Tea For Two," recorded live at Mister Kelly Restaurant in Chicago on April 27, 1958. He recorded for Columbia Records, and his works were also recorded by artists such as Johnny Mathis and Anita O'Day. Masters was present at the inaugural Newport Jazz Festival and participated in the Newport Festival Tour, performing with or alongside prominent jazz bands, including Gene Krupa and the Australian Jazz Quartette. He made numerous appearances at Playboy Clubs and performed in Palm Springs for five years at venues like the Trinidad, Tennis Club, and Biltimore, before concluding with an engagement at Canyon Lounge.
