Joe Zawinul was an Austrian jazz and fusion keyboard player, pianist, bandleader, composer, and arranger, born on July 7, 1932, in Vienna, Austria. He began his musical journey playing the accordion with his family and gained recognition as a jazz musician in 1952. Zawinul is best known for his work as a musician and composer on several influential albums recorded between 1969 and 1972, including "In a Silent Way" (1969), "Bitches Brew" (1970), "Live-Evil" (1971), and "Big Fun" (1974). In 1970, he co-founded Weather Report, one of the seminal jazz-fusion bands of the 1970s, alongside another former Miles Davis musician. After the band split in 1986, Zawinul embarked on solo tours and recordings, forming and playing in several other bands. He was also a renowned composer and recognized as a pioneer of electronic keyboards in jazz music. Joe Zawinul passed away from skin cancer on September 11, 2007, in Vienna, Austria, at the age of 75.
