Joey Negro, born on June 18, 1964, in Isle of Wight, England, was the primary alias used by the artist from 1990 until July 2020, when he announced he would be dropping it. He had his first solo release in 1990 and, believing his own name to be somewhat mundane, felt the need for an alias. Under pressure to meet a deadline and unable to think of a suitable name, he drew inspiration from the artist names Pal Joey and J Walter Negro, which he found among a pile of records on his desk, to create the name Joey Negro.
