Johann Jacob Froberger (baptized 19 May 1616 – 7 May 1667) was a prominent German Baroque composer, keyboard virtuoso, and organist. He is recognized as one of the most famous composers of the Baroque era and the earliest important German composer for the harpsichord. Froberger's style is characterized by an integration of French, Italian, and other influences with the more austere style of German keyboard music. He is noted as the first German master of the keyboard suite and is remembered for his highly idiomatic and personal descriptive harpsichord pieces, which are among the earliest known examples of program music. Although little of his music was published during his lifetime, Froberger's influence extended through posthumous prints and manuscript copies. His powerful and imaginative organ toccatas and fantasias were highly regarded, and his music influenced many composers of the century, remaining known and performed into the eighteenth century.
