John Coltrane was an American saxophonist and jazz composer, born on September 23, 1926, in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA. He passed away on July 17, 1967, in Huntington, Long Island, New York, at the age of 40 due to liver cancer. Coltrane's early recordings showcased his talent within the bebop and hardbop genres, but his lasting legacy is primarily associated with the modal jazz he pioneered with his classic quartet from 1961 to 1965, as well as his explorations in free jazz later in his career. He was extensively recorded as a leader and also performed as a sideman with many notable figures in jazz. Throughout his life, Coltrane's music and outlook became increasingly spiritual. In 1969, he was posthumously proclaimed a saint by the African Orthodox Saint John Coltrane Church in San Francisco. Coltrane's second wife was a pianist, and their son, born in 1965, is also a saxophonist. In 2007, he received a posthumous "Special Citation" from the Pulitzer Prize Board for his masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship, and iconic centrality to the history of jazz.
