John Dankworth was a British jazz composer, saxophonist, clarinetist, and band leader, born on September 20, 1927, in Woodford, Essex, England. He passed away on February 7, 2010, in Marylebone, London, at the age of 82. Early in his career, he was usually billed as Johnny Dankworth. A pioneer of bebop in England, he founded the Club Eleven in 1948, which was the first performance venue in London dedicated to modern jazz. He established the Dankworth Seven in 1950, which lasted until 1953, and led big bands until 1960. From the late 1950s, Dankworth worked as a film composer and later as music director for his wife, a jazz singer. Together, they founded "The Stables," a music venue, in 1970 at their home in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire. He was also a co-founder of a music organization in 1966.
