John Gary Williams was a Memphis-born singer and songwriter, known for his fiercely independent spirit. He was born on an unspecified date and passed away on May 28, 2019, at the age of 73. Williams' journey to stardom was interrupted when he and fellow Mad Lad William Brown were drafted into the military in 1966. After returning from Vietnam in 1968, he rejoined the group and recorded a solo album for Stax in 1973. The Mad Lads reunited in 1984 and continued to perform intermittently for many years. Prior to his music career, Williams was involved with the Invaders, a Memphis "militant" group inspired by the Black Panthers, particularly active during the late 1960s and the sanitation strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis.
