John Hammond, Sr. was an influential American record producer, promoter, talent scout, writer, music critic, and civil rights activist. Born on December 15, 1910, in New York City, NY, he played a significant role in the music industry, discovering numerous artists throughout his career. He was notably responsible for uncovering talents such as Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and many others. Hammond was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement in 1986. He passed away on July 10, 1987, in New York City, NY. Please note that he should not be confused with his son, the blues musician.
