John Hartford (December 30, 1937 – June 4, 2001) was born in New York City to Dr. Carl and Mary Harford. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where he developed a strong connection to the Mississippi River, which would influence much of his music and career. Hartford began working on the river at the age of 16, and he later changed his last name to 'Hartford.' He was a father and was married, though details about his children and spouse are not provided. In the 1980s, Hartford was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which ultimately led to his death on June 4, 2001, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 63. He is widely recognized for inventing the musical style known as Newgrass and was skilled in playing the banjo, fiddle, and guitar, in addition to being a singer-songwriter.
