John J. Francis was an Australian singer, songwriter, musician, recording engineer, producer, and radio presenter, born in 1945 in Murwillumbah and raised on the outskirts of Newcastle. He rose to prominence in the early 1970s with his hit single "Play Mumma, Sing Me A Song," as well as the song "Simple Ben." Francis began his music career in the early 1960s with the Newcastle R&B band "The Sorrows." In 1970, he moved to Sydney after an invitation from David Gibson to try out as a sound engineer, eventually managing the studio. Over four years, he engineered, mixed, and produced for other artists while releasing five singles and four albums himself. In 1976, he joined the Sydney "youth counterculture" radio station 2JJ, where he hosted the Friday and Saturday midnight-to-dawn shifts for about ten years. John J. Francis passed away in 2022.
