John Morris was a renowned concert and tour promoter and production coordinator, born on May 16, 1939, in Manhattan, New York, USA. He played a pivotal role in the rock music explosion of the 1960s and is best known for his work as the production coordinator and master of ceremonies at the iconic Woodstock festival. Morris was also instrumental in running legendary venues such as Fillmore East in New York City and the Rainbow Theater in London. His career began as a lighting designer for theater productions and later for rock concerts. In 1967, he gained prominence by organizing a significant free concert featuring Jefferson Airplane in Toronto. The following year, he partnered with Bill Graham to open Fillmore East, which quickly became a hotspot for top acts like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Allman Brothers. At Woodstock, Morris was responsible for crucial announcements and played a key role in the festival's success, transforming it into a free concert amid various challenges. He continued to produce concerts for major acts into the 1980s before venturing into antiques and dealing in Native American art and artifacts.
