John Piilani Watkins was born on December 24, 1928, and passed away on February 25, 1983. He was a kumu hula, which is a practitioner and teacher of hula, as well as a musician and composer. In 2009, he was posthumously awarded a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts.
