John Zorn is an American saxophonist and composer, born on September 2, 1953, in New York City, USA. He owns a record label and has collaborated with numerous experimental musicians, particularly in the realms of improvised music, modern classical music, and jazz, while also producing music across various styles. As a child, Zorn played piano, guitar, and flute. He attended college in St. Louis, where he discovered free jazz, before dropping out and relocating to Manhattan. In Manhattan, he held concerts in his small apartment, utilizing a variety of reeds, duck calls, tapes, and more. In the mid-1980s, he signed to a label and has since released a vast number of records, often putting out several each year. Zorn's recorded output includes works by his own bands, Masada, which plays klezmer music often described as Jewish jazz, and Naked City, known for its aggressive blend of jazz, rock, and grindcore. He has collaborated with various musicians and has composed music for television and film, which is featured in an ongoing series of records on his label. His compositions range from jazz-based to classical, and he has created several "game pieces" that allow performers to improvise within specific structural guidelines, with works named after sports, including Pool, Archery, Lacrosse, and Cobra.
