Johnnie Clarke, born on January 12, 1955, in Kingston, Jamaica, rose to prominence in the 1970s after collaborating with a notable producer. Under this producer's guidance during 1975-76, Clarke emerged as one of the most exciting new singers in Jamaica. His repertoire featured a compelling mix of militant "dread" tunes and love songs, which were given a contemporary style by the Aggrovators studio band, quickly gaining popularity among discerning dancehall patrons in Jamaica and beyond. Lee, his producer, encouraged him to cover classic Jamaican standards by various artists. Following this fruitful period, Clarke continued to record for Lee and other diverse producers. In the mid-80s, he laid down tracks in the UK at Ariwa Studios. During the 1990s, he recorded for several entities in the UK, including a hitmaking production duo.
