Johnnie Mae Matthews was a prominent singer, pianist, producer, songwriter, and record executive, born on December 31, 1922, in Bessemer, Alabama. She passed away on January 6, 2002. Known as the Godmother of Detroit soul, she founded Detroit's Northern Recording Company in 1958, a label that launched the careers of several future stars. Throughout her career, she established multiple record labels in Detroit, including those named after her husband and daughter. While she was most active as a recording artist during the 1960s, she shifted her focus to producing in the 1970s. This period saw her involved with a group that featured her son on drums and her daughter as the lead singer.
