Johnny "Chano" Martínez was a renowned Mexican bassist, composer, arranger, and conductor, born in 1924 in San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalisco, Mexico. He later moved to Chicago, United States, where he developed a long and successful artistic career. Influenced by notable musicians such as Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie, Martínez began his career in the 1950s as an instrumentalist with the orchestras of Mexican pianist Luis Arcaraz and Spanish musician Xavier Cugat. Through his talent and perseverance, he established a respected presence in the Latin music scene on the West Coast of the United States.
