Johnny Clarke, born on January 12, 1955, in Kingston, Jamaica, rose to prominence in the 1970s after collaborating with a notable producer. Under this producer's guidance during 1975-76, Clarke emerged as one of the most exciting new singers in Jamaica. His repertoire, a compelling blend of militant "dread" tunes and love songs, was given a contemporary edge by the Aggrovators studio band, quickly gaining popularity among discerning dancehall patrons in Jamaica and beyond. Encouraged to cover classic Jamaican standards, Clarke continued to record with this producer and others, including various notable figures in the industry. He also laid down tracks in the UK at Ariwa Studios during the mid-80s. In the 1990s, he recorded for different producers in the UK, including a hitmaking production duo.
