Johnny Dankworth was a British jazz composer, saxophonist, clarinetist, and band leader, born on September 20, 1927, in Woodford, Essex, England. He passed away on February 7, 2010, in Marylebone, London, at the age of 82. Early in his career, he was usually billed as Johnny Dankworth and became a pioneer of bebop in England. In 1948, he founded Club Eleven, which was the first performance venue in London specifically dedicated to modern jazz, and in 1950, he established the Dankworth Seven, which lasted until 1953. He led big bands until 1960, with his main arranger later becoming his orchestrator. From the late 1950s onward, Dankworth worked as a film composer and later served as the music director for his wife, a jazz singer. Together, they founded "The Stables," a music venue in 1970, located in the old stables block of their home in Wavendon, near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. He was also a co-founder of a music organization in 1966.
