Johnny Guarnieri was an American jazz and stride pianist, born on March 23, 1917, in New York City, New York. He passed away on January 7, 1985, in Livingston, New Jersey. Guarnieri began his musical career playing in high school bands and, after graduation, performed with the George Hall Orchestra and Mike Riley. From 1939 to 1942, he alternated between playing with Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman. He also worked with the Jimmy Dorsey band and Raymond Scott, in addition to leading his own bands. Guarnieri claimed to be a direct descendant of the renowned Italian family of Guarnerius, known for perfecting the violin.
