Johnny Jones and the King Casuals were a rhythm and blues group based in Nashville, Tennessee, active during the 1960s. They frequently performed in the North Nashville club district and at Printer's Alley clubs, and often served as the house band for the local television program, Night Train. The band was originally formed as 'The King Kasuals' in 1962 by Jimi Hendrix and bassist Billy Cox in Clarksville, Tennessee, after both were discharged from Fort Campbell Army post, and they eventually relocated to Nashville. Johnny Jones, born John Albert Jones on August 17, 1936, in Eads, Tennessee, moved to Chicago to practice blues with Junior Wells and others before returning to Nashville in the early 1960s to work as a session musician. He took over leadership of the King Casuals around 1964, replacing Hendrix. The band recorded several singles over the years, including the popular R&B track "Purple Haze," which gained traction in Northern soul clubs in England during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Johnny Jones released his final recording, Blues Is In the House, in 2001, and he passed away on October 14, 2009, at the age of 73.
