Johnny Mae Matthews was a prominent singer, pianist, producer, songwriter, and record executive born on December 31, 1922, in Bessemer, Alabama. She passed away on January 6, 2002. Known as the Godmother of Detroit soul, she founded Detroit's Northern Recording Company in 1958, which became a launching pad for several future stars. Throughout her career, Johnny Mae established multiple record labels in Detroit, including those named after her husband and daughter. As a recording artist, she was most active during the 1960s, but in the 1970s, she shifted her focus primarily to producing. She later reformed a group that included her son on drums and her daughter as the lead singer.
