Johnny Otis was an American bandleader, musician, talent scout, author, and label owner, born on December 28, 1921, in Vallejo, California. He passed away on January 17, 2012, in Alta Dena, California. Otis was the father of a guitarist and drummer. In 1956, he co-founded the Ultra Records label, but after discovering an existing label with the same name, they changed it to a different name. In 1960, he established another label. Otis played a significant role in shaping the R&B genre starting in the late 1940s and remained active in the industry for over 30 years. He hosted his own music variety show, The Johnny Otis Show, from 1954 to 1955. A versatile musician, he could seamlessly transition between various instruments, including the piano, vibraphone, drums, and guitar. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a Non-Performer.
