Johnny Torruella was born on June 24, 1939, in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He began his career at an early age at radio station WISO in Ponce and joined several bands in Mayagüez while studying Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez. After serving in the Military Service, he founded Johnny Torruella y sus PlayBoys in 1958, later dropping the name "PlayBoys" to avoid associations with an adult magazine. He continued to perform with his band, now known as La Orquesta de Johnny Torruella, collaborating with notable musicians such as Ruth Fernandez, Carmen Delia Supongo, Cheo Feliciano, and Papo Lucca. In addition to his music career, he remained passionate about working as a radio announcer throughout his life.
