Johnny Ventura, born Johnny Ventura Y Su Combo, is a prominent figure in the history of popular Dominican music. In 1964, he founded his own orchestra, known as El Combo Show, at the request of Cuban businessman Angel Guinea. This orchestra featured many talented Dominican artists, including Luisito Martí, Fausto Rey, and Anthony Rios. Ventura is recognized for his innovative lyrics and catchy rhythms, which garnered a dedicated fanbase. The name "Combo-Show" reflects the limited number of performers and the visual spectacle they presented on stage. He modernized the merengue genre by introducing instruments such as saxophones, trumpets, piano, drums, and timbales, as well as electronic effects, while still preserving the essence and vibrant character of merengue.
