Johnny Ventura, born Johnny Ventura Y Su Combo, is a pivotal figure in the history of popular Dominican music. In 1964, he founded his own orchestra, known as El Combo Show, at the suggestion of Cuban businessman Angel Guinea. The orchestra featured notable Dominican talents such as Luisito Martí, Fausto Rey, and Anthony Rios. Ventura is celebrated for his innovative lyrics and catchy rhythms, which resonated with a large fan base. The name "Combo-Show" reflects the limited number of musicians and the visual spectacle they created on stage. He modernized the merengue rhythm by incorporating saxophones, trumpets, piano, drums, electronic effects, and timbales, while still preserving the essence and vibrant qualities of traditional merengue.
