Jon Hassel was an American trumpeter, composer, and author born on March 22, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. He passed away on June 26, 2021, in Los Angeles, California. Hassel was the creator of a musical style he termed "Fourth World," which blended ancient and digital elements, combining composed and improvised music from both Eastern and Western traditions. After completing composition studies and earning university degrees in the United States, he traveled to Europe to study electronic and serial music. He later returned to New York, where he made his first recordings with minimalist masters. Through these collaborations, he met Hindustani raga master, which led him to embark on a lifelong quest to transform his teacher's Kirana vocal mastery into a new trumpet sound and style.
