Jon Hassell was an American trumpeter, composer, and author, born on March 22, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. He passed away on June 26, 2021, in Los Angeles, California. Hassell was the creator of a unique musical style he termed "Fourth World," which blended ancient and digital sounds, combining composed and improvised elements from both Eastern and Western traditions. After completing his composition studies and earning university degrees in the USA, he moved to Europe to study electronic and serial music. He later returned to New York, where he recorded with minimalist masters and met Hindustani raga master, leading to a lifelong pursuit of transforming his teacher's Kirana vocal mastery into a distinctive trumpet sound and style.
