Jordan De La Sierra, born Jordan Stenberg in 1947 in California's San Joaquin Valley, is a pioneering pianist, vocalist, and post-minimalist composer known for his contributions to new age music, which he began exploring before it became an established genre. His early life was diverse, encompassing a strong focus on music alongside interests in basketball and film. At 15, he recorded his first single with his pop band for Hollywood's Joli label. De La Sierra's musical journey advanced at 17 when he gave a classical vocal recital in four languages, earning a scholarship to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. There, he studied both classical repertoire and the works of experimental composers like Erik Satie, John Cage, and Morton Feldman, while also developing a unique style of song forms. After graduating, he co-founded Project Artaud in an abandoned warehouse in San Francisco, collaborating with dancers and musicians. In 1969, he met Terry Riley, who became a mentor and introduced him to Hindustani classical music through Pandit Pran Nath. This experience led to the creation of his first long-form work, Music in Bong, which included a section that was broadcast on KPFA in 1972. De La Sierra made a notable appearance on the same station in 1975, performing during an ongoing broadcast. His masterwork, Gymnosphere: Song of the Rose, was recorded in 1977 with producer Stephen Hill. The album was unique in its recording
