Jordi Savall is a Spanish viol player, conductor, composer, and educator, born in 1941 in Igualada, Catalonia. He is primarily devoted to Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music. Savall founded several ensembles, including a period instruments ensemble in 1974, which became known as in 2001, focusing on early and Baroque music from the 10th to the 18th centuries. In 1987, he established a Medieval-inspired vocal ensemble and in 1989, another period instruments ensemble specializing in music from the Baroque to Romanticism (roughly 1600-1850). Since 1998, he has released his recordings under his own label. Savall was married from 1968 until his wife's death in 2011, and they had a daughter and a son. In 2017, he married a Spanish philosopher.
