Jorge Ben, also known as Jorge Ben Jor since 1988, is a Brazilian musician, vocalist, and songwriter born on March 22, 1939, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He gained international recognition in the early 1960s when Sérgio Mendes covered his song "Mas Que Nada." Initially recording as a samba artist, his early works featured samba music and Bossa Nova influences, which were predominant in the 60s. Influenced by American Rock and Funk music, he developed a new style called Samba-Rock with his 1976 album Africa Brasil, transitioning from heavy acoustic guitar use to electric guitar. As of 2023, he continues to perform in Brazil, with rare appearances in other countries.
