José Afonso, commonly known as Zeca Afonso, was born on August 2, 1929, in Aveiro, Portugal, and passed away on February 23, 1987, in Setúbal. He is regarded as one of the most influential folk and political musicians in Portuguese history. Afonso became an icon among Portuguese left-wing activists for his music's role in resisting Oliveira Salazar's dictatorial regime. His efforts contributed to the success of the Carnation Revolution in 1974, a pro-democratic leftist military coup. Following the revolution, he remained an active musician, composing political and folk songs that often critiqued post-revolutionary changes. Even after his death, Afonso's music continues to resonate, both in Portugal and internationally.
