José Mangual was a renowned percussionist born on March 18, 1924, in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico. He passed away on September 4, 1998, in Manhattan, New York. Influenced by groups such as Casino De La Playa, Septeto Puerto Rico, and Isaac Oviedo, Mangual mastered various Latin percussion instruments, including bongos, congas, and timbales. His expertise led to extensive session work beginning in the late 1940s after he arrived in New York City. Throughout his career, Mangual contributed to numerous albums, including notable works like 'April in Paris' (1955), 'Sketches of Spain' (1959), 'Talkin' Verve' (1957), 'Babarabatiri' (1951), 'Spanish Grease' (1965), and 'Viva Emiliano Zapata' (1974), as well as various compilations. He performed with a wide array of artists, including Chano Pozo Percussion Quintet, among others. As a leader, Mangual recorded 'Understanding Latin Rhythms, Vol. 1' (1974), which became a popular learning resource for percussionists for over two decades. In 1977, he released the LP 'Buyú,' showcasing his percussive strength and dedication to the art.
