Joseph Achron, also known as Iosif Akhron (1886–1943), was a Russian-American composer and violinist of Jewish origin, born in Lazdijai, Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire). He studied violin and composition at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory from 1899 to 1904. In 1911, Achron joined the Society for Jewish Folk Music and composed the Hebrew Melody for violin and orchestra. By 1913, he became the head of the violin and chamber music departments at the Kharkiv Conservatory. After World War I, he toured extensively, giving over 1000 concerts in three years across Russia, Europe, and the Near East. In 1922, Achron moved to Berlin, where he managed the Jewish music publishing company Yivneh. He immigrated to the United States in 1925, settling in New York, where he taught violin at the Westchester Conservatory. In 1927, he performed his Violin Concerto No. 1. Achron relocated to Hollywood in 1934, continuing his concert career and composing music for films. He performed his second and third Violin Concertos in 1936 and 1939, respectively.
