Josquin des Prez (c. 1450/1455 – August 27, 1521) was a prominent composer of the Franco-Flemish School of Polyphony, born in the County of Hainaut, present-day Belgium. Often referred to simply as Josquin, he was renowned as a singer, composer, and educator. His music is characterized by great transparency and a tight structure, closely matching the text. In the mid-15th century, he was a leading figure in the chanson, applying techniques of canon and counterpoint to secular songs. Josquin is regarded as the most important composer of the entire Renaissance and worked mainly in France and Italy.
