Joy Division was a British punk/post-punk/new wave band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. They were initially misnamed on a flyer for their first gig alongside Buzzcocks and Penetration but introduced themselves as Joy Division at the start of their first performance. The band continued under this name throughout 1977 until they recorded their first EP, after which they officially changed their name to Joy Division in early 1978, just before releasing their first 7" EP. Following the tragic suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis on May 18, 1980, due to issues related to grand mal seizures, depression, and personal struggles, the band was renamed. This decision followed a pact made by all four members long before Curtis's death, stating that should any member leave, the remaining members would change the band's name. The lineup consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals, occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar, keyboards), Peter "Hooky" Hook (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Stephen Morris (drums, percussion).
