Her maiden name was Erna Raad, and after her first marriage in the early 1970s, she became Erna Strube. Following her second marriage in 1976, she adopted the name Erna Liebenow. Fleming began her music career in the late 1950s at the age of 14, winning a Schlager contest in Mannheim. In 1966, she met a musician who introduced her to his band, joining them that same year as the frontwoman. The band was renamed in 1966 and later changed its name again in 1969, gaining popularity in the early 1970s. Due to this success, she launched a solo career in 1971 while her former band continued to perform under the same name and previously as Hit Kids. Her most significant hit came in 1971 with "Neckarbrücken-Blues." Fleming represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 in Stockholm with the song "Ein Lied Kann Eine Brücke Sein."
