Juan Atkins, born on December 9, 1962, is a major electronic music pioneer from Detroit. He has released many classics of Detroit techno under various aliases. The 1982 electro track "Clear," recorded with Rick Davis, is often regarded as the first proto-techno track. Atkins experimented by fusing the extraterrestrial funk of his influences with futuristic rhythms and progressive dance theories, laying the blueprint for Detroit techno with his Model 500 12" releases on his own label. Atkins, alongside fellow artists from Detroit, helped propel the genre across the Atlantic, sparking the emerging rave culture and influencing the global dance community. Throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s, he continued to be a prolific and sought-after producer, culminating in the use of one of his originals for the 2000 launch of the Ford Focus 'Detroit Techno' automobile. His performances have packed clubs nationally from Detroit to NYC and internationally from London to Venezuela. Juan has mastered the art of incorporating new rhythmic elements from contemporary dance music while maintaining his distinctive sense of melody. Celebrated for his extensive production credits and ability to energize dance floors, his music and DJing are revered in Europe and embraced worldwide. Additionally, Juan has been prolific in releasing albums, remixes, and collaborations on labels from Belgium and Germany, among others.
