Kandia Kouyaté, also known as Kandja Kouyaté, was born in 1959 in Kita, Mali. She is a Malian jelimuso (female griot) and kora player. Kouyaté's career began in the early 1980s, during which she started incorporating female choral vocals into her music. This innovative practice was later adopted by prominent stars and has since become an integral part of Malian music.
