Karate Boogaloo is a quartet that forms the rhythm section of the long-time Melbourne soul favorites, The Cactus Channel. Known for their unconventional funk, they embrace the beauty of coloring outside the lines, guided by a steadfast commitment to bending the rules. In their early 20s, they recorded in moldy home studios and sweaty attic spaces, reimagining deep funk and wonky soul into an off-kilter sound influenced by cinematic themes, classic breaks, and library music. Their music is characterized by a highly refined sense of inelegance, tongue-in-cheek humor, and a sometimes jarring dose of zany 21st-century surrealism. Karate Boogaloo consistently carve out their own niche, blending raw musicianship with extensive experience from playing together in the studio and on stage, resulting in a glowing presence that is rarely seen. They adhere to their own rules when making records, opting to record and mix on tape without plugins or edits, and releasing exclusively in mono. This approach is not about anachronism but aligns with the KB manifesto: a chosen set of limitations that leads to a specific outcome, best appreciated through their “KB’s Mixtape” series of LPs.
