Kawai Cockett was born on September 24, 1937, in Puko'o on the island of Molokai'i. His passion for music led him to travel throughout the islands, eventually reaching Honolulu, where he caught the attention of Hula Records founder Don McDiarmid Jr. This collaboration resulted in his debut album, which featured the song "Beautiful Kaua'i," a piece still closely associated with him. Over the years, Cockett continued to release new music while preserving the traditional Hawaiian style. He passed away on September 20, 2006, in Kane'ohe on the island of Oahu, due to complications from diabetes, just four days shy of his 69th birthday. In 2004, he was honored with a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts.
