Kay Kyser was an American bandleader and radio personality born on June 18, 1905, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He gained fame in the 1930s and 1940s, particularly as the host of "Kay Kyser’s Kollege of Musical Knowledge," where he affectionately referred to himself as the "Old Perfesser." During World War II, Kyser's band was one of the most popular on the USO circuit, where he engaged with troops in a familiar and friendly manner. Despite his success, Kyser faced challenges, including arthritis in his hands, which led to his retirement as a performer in 1950. He later revealed that he could not read music or play an instrument. Kyser was married to a singer from 1944 until his death in 1985. He passed away on July 23, 1985, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at the age of 80. In recognition of his contributions to radio, he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1990.
