Kelis is an American singer and songwriter, born on August 21, 1979, in Harlem, New York City. She graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in 1997, having played the violin for 14 years. Kelis signed a production deal with the production team The Neptunes, who produced her debut album "Kaleidoscope," released in 1999 on Virgin Records. Her sophomore album, "Wanderland," released in 2001, did not achieve success in the US and led to her being dropped by Virgin due to its lackluster performance. In 2005, she married a rapper, but the couple divorced in 2010. Kelis's career gained momentum with her third album, "Tasty," released in 2003, featuring the hit single "Milkshake," which was nominated for a Grammy in 2004 and topped Billboard's Hot Dance/Club Play Songs chart in December 2003 with remixes by X-Press 2 and DJ Zinc. Her fourth album, "Kelis Was Here," released in 2006, was certified Silver in the UK for sales exceeding 60,000 copies. After a brief hiatus, she returned with her first electronic album, "Flesh Tone," in 2010, featuring various producers.
