Ken McIntyre, born Kenneth Arthur McIntyre on September 7, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, orchestrator, and educator. He passed away on June 13, 2001, in New York City. McIntyre was primarily known for his alto saxophone but was also proficient in flute, bass clarinet, oboe, bassoon, double bass, drum set, and piano, among many other woodwind instruments. In the 1990s, he changed his name to Makanda Ken McIntyre after receiving a paper with that word from a man in Zimbabwe; it means "many skins" in Ndebele and "many heads" in the Shona language.
