Kenia is a New York-based jazz and world music vocalist, born on August 26, 1957, in Nova Iguaçu, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She relocated to Long Island, New York, in 1975, returned to Rio after her studies, and moved back to New York in 1980. In 1987, she moved to Los Angeles, only to return to New York in 1990. Currently, she resides in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. Kenia sings in both Portuguese and English and has worked with various artists. She is the owner of Mooka Entertainment. Known as Kenia, she prefers to avoid using her possible surnames: Acioly, from her birth; Gould, from her first marriage; and Ashby, from her marriage to her musical director and musician.
