Kid Creole & The Coconuts is an American Latin pop band founded in 1980 in New York City. Fronted by Kid Creole and backed by a trio, the group also features various members. They achieved most of their success in the 1980s. Their debut album received critical acclaim but did not perform well commercially. Their second album, a concept piece paired with a New York Public Theater stage production, garnered positive reviews, highlighting Darnell's talents as a clever lyricist and astute composer, arranger, and producer. The band's international breakthrough came with their third album, 1982's "Tropical Gangsters," which reached #3 in the UK and produced three Top 10 hits: "Stool Pigeon," "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy," and "I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby." "Dear Addy" also made the Top 40. In the US, the album was retitled "Wise Guy" and peaked at #145, with "I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby" making a brief appearance on the R&B charts. Darnell described Kid Creole as an exaggerated version of his style modeled after 1930s/40s jazz singer and showman Cab Calloway, embodying a lounge lizard/bon vivant persona, which an ex-girlfriend referred to as a “lovable rogue.”
