Kid Creole And The Coconuts is an American Latin pop band founded in 1980 in New York City. The band is fronted by August Darnell and backed by a trio of musicians, also featuring additional performers. They gained most of their success in the 1980s. Their debut album received critical acclaim but did not achieve commercial success. Their second album was a concept album that was paired with a New York Public Theater stage production, earning positive reviews and recognizing Darnell as a clever lyricist and skilled composer, arranger, and producer. The band's international breakthrough came with their third album, 1982's "Tropical Gangsters," which reached #3 in the UK and produced three Top 10 hits: "Stool Pigeon," "Annie, I'm Not Your Daddy," and "I'm A Wonderful Thing, Baby," with "Dear Addy" also making the Top 40. In the US, the album was retitled "Wise Guy" and reached #145, with "I'm a Wonderful Thing, Baby" nearing the R&B charts. Darnell described his artistic inspiration, stating, "In the Savannah Band I’d modelled my style on 1930s/40s jazz singer and showman Cab Calloway, and I created Kid Creole as an extreme version of that, a sort of lounge lizard/bon vivant or what an ex-girlfriend called a 'lovable rogue'."
